FOURTEEN

WORSE THAN A THIEF

ARTYOM, PRESENT DAY

We arrive at the private bay Caliber keeps on Pebble Beach. I still don't know what the hell Red Nose did, but I have a feeling Cal didn't tell me because I have a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later. He hops out of my truck and checks his Glock, loads it, and then puts the safety on before tucking it in the back of his pants beneath his shirt. His movements prompt me to do the same with mine. We both toss our already turned off phones onto the seats of the truck and close the doors.

I step into the garage of his large property, following behind him—my blood boiling. I’m already pissed off but I have a feeling this is about to be some double bullshit and I'm going to want to kill this motherfucker on sight. Cal unlocks the garage door, which opens into the hall of his beach home, and walks toward the kitchen at the back of the house.

The open design brings brightness into the home decorated with large white furniture with red and white designer rugs that litter the floors of most of the rooms on the first floor. I have always joked with him that they chose bloodred rugs to hide the massacres and beatings that had occurred within these walls. Of course, he'd laugh but never once denied my allegations.

The man is just as demented as the red hair on his head. It's better to stay on his good side. Although, we've come to an understanding because we're both fucking crazy.

Cal leads me into the basement of his home. The unmistakable sound of a fist hitting flesh echoes up the steps.

“Started it without me?” Cal asks as the duo come into view.

Dominic keeps his eyes on continues to hit his victim. “Sean, what's up?” Caliber saunters closer to them and stops at the edge of the protective plastic, laid beneath Sean and the chair he's strapped to.

I’m about to kill this motherfucker. My stomach flutters as a smile curves my lips. I beam with the swing of Dominic’s fist. If only that were mine… again. It’s been a while since Cal and I have worked together. The bandage, held on by a patch of dried blood, dangles from Sean’s broken nose. It flops around when Dom lands a blow to the man’s ribs.

Sean whimpers like a little bitch.

Dom pounds into the other side.

“Cal, Cal-what-is-this, wha-what did I do?”

A smile slowly curves on my lips. “Whoa, whoa, whoa! Is this the same badass from last night?” I rush forward, gesturing toward the beggar. I chuckle. “You sound like a bitch now!” I pull the gun from my waist and cock it knowing the safety is still on, but Sean doesn't.

He jumps at the sound which makes my dick twitch.

Dominic backs up and grabs a towel he has on the worker’s table against the wall of the basement. He wipes the blood on his knuckles.

“Chill, Artyom. I have questions for him.
